Because I am a Mom, Wife & one-woman business my time is very precious. I enjoy all aspects of creating my pieces but needed a little help keeping up with my current production. I needed a way to cut my production time but without hiring someone else to do the work. This is my personal choice as I feel I can’t claim “I made it” if someone else is doing part of the work.
For almost 2 years I did my research; my father is a retired Machinist and current gunsmith... So we tried several tumbling media (even crushed walnut shells) until I achieved the results I wanted in a short amount of time!
Eureka! We struck gold!!!
I now can feel confident in offering it to you since I personally have been using my Brushed Tumbling Mix in my own studio for all my Jewelry & Home Decor.
I consider my Brushed Tumbling Mix my little studio assistant. Seriously!
My Tumbling Medium cuts my production time by at least an hour sometimes more! Step by step instructions are supplied with your order but let me just tell you... You'll be surprised at what else you can complete in that time!
Brushed Tumbling Mix is meant to replace the time-consuming steps of hand or machine deburring, scratch or scarring removal, and polishing to a silky-smooth brushed finish. If you choose you can always take your metal to a higher polish with steel shot or hand polishing after using the tumbling mix but I quite like the soft sheen on my pieces.
Brushed Tumbling Mix can be used in both a vibratory and rotary tumbler. But will work much faster in a rotary tumbler. I personally use the Lortone 3lb. rotary tumbler & 18lb. XL Vibratory Tumbler.
Because the Mix is designed to remove the surface metal I highly suggest that only solid metal be used. My Brushed Tumbling Mix works great on Sterling Silver, Fine Silver, Copper, Gold, Brass, Bronze ect.
You will receive one bag (12-15oz.) of my Brushed Tumbling Mix which is enough media to use in a 3lb. capacity rotary tumbler filled just over 1/3. In my XL 18lb. capacity Vibratory Tumbler I use 10 bags.
***Multiple pieces can be tumbled or use the mix one at a time the choice is yours.
All techniques that work well with the Brushed Tumbling Mix have some sort of texture or raised surface to them, but the mix also works like a 450 fine grit sandpaper on flat surfaces as well.
Brushed Tumbling Mix should not be used with gemstones, cabochons, glass, enamel, resin, ect. Brushed Tumbling Mix is for metalworking only. Those who are setting stones or adding beads, etc., should only do so after your designs have tumbled.
Brushed Tumbling Mix is a product consisting of a natural ceramic medium; 49.6% silicon dioxide (SiO2); 40% aluminum oxide (Al2O3); 5.5% potassium oxide (K2O); 2% sodium oxide (Na2O); 0.4% iron oxide (Fe2O3); 2.5% calcium oxide (CaO). Please keep away from small children, not meant for consumption.
***Some of my research and more detailed product information can be found here! Other research and information has been derived from my personal trials of my product, Brushed Tumbling Mix.
***Tumbler barrels being used for both Brushed Tumbling Mix and steel shot must be cleaned thoroughly between each use. Residue from Brushed Tumbling Mix will remove the polish from steel shot, causing the shot to be ineffective of creating of a high polish on metal. It is recommended that you either have designated barrels for each media, or you rinse the barrels after tumbling with Brushed Tumbling Mix and prior to using your steel shot again.
As with any natural rock or mineral, erosion will occur over time and with friction. The edges of your Brushed Tumbling Mix will begin to round down, leaving you with smaller rounded media. These changes in shape actually benefit the tumbling process by allowing the media to make better contact in tighter spaces on your designs. As it wears you do not need to discard the Brushed Tumbling Mix, simply add more to the barrel.
NOTE: Never put solid pieces of mix down the drain. You are responsible for practicing safe studio protocols. Please check with your local and state regulations regarding the disposal of Brushed Tumbling Mix in your area. (Refer to above contents for proper disposal)
I personally just allow the tiny pieces to dissolve on their own and never remove them. I use a fine metal strainer and wash the media with clean water outside but continually add more of the Brushed Tumbling Mix to the barrel.
